SPYK - Portrait Documentary (2015)
- In memory of Edouard 'Spyk' Gheur 1963 - 2016 -
Idea // Documentary on the life of Edouard 'Spyk' Gheur, a man who has literally seen it all. Starting life in Belgium and South Africa, Spyk became a professional rugby player playing for the Dallas Harlequins after moving to America. He then went into bodybuilding and modelling but was another unfortunate victim of the 80s celebrity lifestyle when he became hooked on steroids and recreational drugs. In the late 90s, his aorta exploded leaving him clinically dead and in a coma. Having being told he would never walk, be paraplegic and never father a child Spyk has devoted the rest of his life to prove the doctors wrong. He now lives in Folkestone and has a beautiful daughter and has written a book to inspire others with similar lives that nothing is impossible.
Production Information // This whole film was shot in 24 hours. We travelled to Folkestone from Manchester to meet with Spyk and then spent a day following him around to capture a small portion of his life. It was really interesting to listen to Spyk's story and trying to imagine going through what he's been through. It was very eye opening.
